The walkthrough
Step by step.
Step 1 of 4
Gathering Materials for Your Scarf
For your first knitting project, you'll need yarn (worsted weight recommended), knitting needles (size 8-10 US/5-6mm), scissors, and a tapestry needle for finishing. Choose a soft, medium-weight yarn in your favorite color - avoid slippery or novelty yarns for your first project.
- Start with light-colored yarn so you can see your stitches clearly
- Bamboo or wooden needles are easier for beginners than metal
- Buy 2-3 skeins of yarn for a standard scarf (about 400-600 yards total)
Step 2 of 4
Learning the Cast-On
The cast-on creates the foundation row of stitches. We'll learn the long-tail cast-on method: make a slip knot, leaving a tail about 3x the width of your scarf. Place it on your needle, then create loops using both the working yarn and tail. Cast on 30-40 stitches for a standard scarf width.
- Keep your stitches loose - they should slide easily on the needle
- Count your stitches to ensure you have the right number
- Practice the cast-on a few times before starting your scarf
Step 3 of 4
Mastering the Knit Stitch
The knit stitch is the foundation of knitting. Insert right needle into first stitch from left to right, wrap yarn around right needle counterclockwise, pull through to create new stitch, slide old stitch off left needle. Repeat across the row. This creates garter stitch (all knit rows) which looks the same on both sides.
- Keep consistent tension - not too tight, not too loose
- Knit every row for a simple, reversible garter stitch scarf
- Count your stitches at the end of each row to catch mistakes early
- Don't split the yarn with your needle
- If you drop a stitch, don't panic - learn to pick it up
Step 4 of 4
Binding Off and Finishing
When your scarf reaches desired length (5-6 feet typically), it's time to bind off: knit 2 stitches, insert left needle into first stitch on right needle, lift it over the second stitch and off the needle. Knit one more stitch and repeat. Cut yarn leaving 6-inch tail, pull through last stitch to secure. Weave in all loose ends using tapestry needle.
- Bind off loosely so the edge matches the rest of the scarf
- Block your finished scarf by gently washing and laying flat to dry
- Be proud of your first project - imperfections add character!
