Preparing Your Materials

Cut eight pieces of cotton cord, each 12 feet long. The general rule is to cut cords 4 times the desired length of your finished piece. Fold each cord in half to find the center point.

Step 2 of 6

Attaching Cords with Lark's Head Knot

Fold a cord in half. Place the loop over the dowel, pull the ends through the loop, and tighten. Repeat for all eight cords. Space them evenly across the dowel, leaving 2 inches on each end.

Field note
  • Keep consistent tension for neat knots
  • Number your cords 1-16 to track patterns
03

Step 3 of 6

Creating Square Knots

The square knot is fundamental in macramé. Take four cords: cross the left over the middle two, under the right. Then cross the right over the middle, under the left. Pull tight. This creates one square knot.

Field note
  • Practice makes perfect - your knots will get neater
  • Keep middle cords straight and taut
04

Step 4 of 6

Building the Pattern

Work in rows. Row 1: Make 4 square knots using cords 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16. Row 2: Skip first 2 cords, make square knots with 3-6, 7-10, 11-14. Alternate these rows 5 times.

Field note
  • Pin your work to a board for stability
  • Count your cords carefully
05

Step 5 of 6

Adding Fringe

Trim all cords to your desired length (typically 10-12 inches). Use a comb or brush to separate the individual strands, creating a fluffy fringe. Trim again for a straight edge.

Field note
  • Wet the cords slightly before brushing for best results
  • Trim gradually - you can always cut more
06

Step 6 of 6

Hanging Your Creation

Tie a length of cord to each end of the dowel for hanging. Your macramé wall hanging is complete! Hang it on a wall hook or nail.

Field note
  • Adjust the hanging cord length for desired height
  • Steam lightly to remove wrinkles if needed
