The walkthrough
Step by step.
Step 1 of 5
Layering the Base
Start with a 1-inch layer of pebbles for drainage. Add a thin layer (1/4 inch) of activated charcoal to keep water fresh and prevent odors. This is crucial for closed terrariums.

- Rinse pebbles before use
- Activated charcoal prevents mold and bacteria
Step 2 of 5
Adding Soil
Add 2-3 inches of succulent potting mix. Create small hills and valleys for visual interest. Use the back of your spoon to create planting holes.
- Use well-draining soil for succulents
- Leave room for plants - don't overfill
Step 3 of 5
Planting Succulents
Gently remove succulents from their containers. Use tweezers or chopsticks to position them in your terrarium. Start with larger plants first, then fill in with smaller ones. Pat soil around roots gently.
- Arrange plants at different heights
- Leave space for growth
Step 4 of 5
Decorating and Finishing
Add decorative stones, small figurines, or other elements. Brush soil off glass walls with a soft brush. Lightly mist plants with water - succulents need very little water.
- Less is more with decorations
- Clean glass thoroughly for best presentation
Step 5 of 5
Terrarium Care
Place in bright, indirect light. Water sparingly - only when soil is completely dry (every 2-3 weeks). For closed terrariums, open lid weekly for air circulation. Trim dead leaves promptly.
- Succulents prefer drier conditions
- Watch for condensation in closed terrariums
