Beginner Woodworking: Build a Simple Shelf
5clear steps

Before you begin

  • Access to basic tools

What you’ll need

  • Pine board (1x8x4 feet)
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Polyurethane or wax finish
  • Shelf brackets (2)
  • Screws
  • Drill with bits
  • Saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Level

The walkthrough

Step by step.

01

Step 1 of 5

Measuring and Cutting

Measure your desired shelf length (typically 24-36 inches). Mark clearly with pencil. Use a square to ensure straight lines. Cut with a saw, following the line carefully. A miter saw works best but a hand saw works too.

Field note
  • Measure twice, cut once
  • Use a guide for straight cuts
Watch for this
  • Wear safety glasses when cutting
  • Keep fingers away from blade
02

Step 2 of 5

Sanding for Smoothness

Start with 120-grit sandpaper. Sand in the direction of the wood grain. Pay extra attention to edges and ends. Progress to 220-grit for a smooth finish. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Field note
  • Sand edges well to prevent splinters
  • Use a sanding block for flat surfaces
03

Step 3 of 5

Staining or Painting

Apply pre-stain wood conditioner if using stain (optional but recommended). Apply stain or paint with brush or cloth, following grain. Let dry per manufacturer instructions. Apply second coat if desired.

Field note
  • Test stain on scrap wood first
  • Work in well-ventilated area
04

Step 4 of 5

Applying Protective Finish

Once stain/paint is completely dry, apply polyurethane or wax. Use thin coats, allowing drying time between coats. Sand lightly with 220-grit between coats. Apply 2-3 coats for durability.

Field note
  • Thin coats prevent drips
  • Allow full cure time before use
05

Step 5 of 5

Installing the Shelf

Mark wall for bracket placement using a level. Drill pilot holes. Install brackets securely into wall studs or use appropriate wall anchors. Place shelf on brackets and secure with screws from underneath.

Field note
  • Use a stud finder for secure mounting
  • Have a helper hold shelf while marking
Watch for this
  • Ensure brackets are level
  • Use appropriate hardware for wall type
