The walkthrough
Step by step.
Step 1 of 4
Understanding the IELTS Exam Format
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) has four sections: Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min), and Speaking (11-14 min). Academic and General Training versions differ in Reading and Writing. Scores range from 0-9 in bands of 0.5. Most universities require 6.0-7.5 overall.
- Understand which version you need (Academic vs General)
- Familiarize yourself with question types
- Take a practice test to identify weak areas
- Plan 2-3 months minimum for preparation
Step 2 of 4
Listening and Reading Strategies
Listening: You hear recordings only once. Skim questions before audio starts, listen for keywords, pay attention to synonyms and paraphrasing. Reading: 40 questions in 60 minutes means 1.5 min per question. Skim for main ideas, scan for specific information, manage time strictly.
Time Management:
Reading: 20 min per passage (3 passages)
Listening: 30 min audio + 10 min transfer
Writing: Task 1 (20 min), Task 2 (40 min)
Speaking: Part 1 (4-5 min), Part 2 (3-4 min), Part 3 (4-5 min)- Practice with official Cambridge IELTS books
- Listen to BBC podcasts and TED talks
- Read The Economist, Scientific American
- Note spelling carefully - UK vs US English both acceptable
Step 3 of 4
Writing Tasks Mastery
Task 1: Describe visual information (graphs, charts, diagrams) in 150+ words. Task 2: Essay on an opinion, problem, or argument in 250+ words. Task 2 is worth twice as much. Use formal academic English, clear structure, varied vocabulary and sentence structures.
- Memorize templates for each Task 1 type
- Practice brainstorming Task 2 topics
- Write at least one essay daily
- Get feedback from teachers or online communities
- Never memorize and regurgitate essays - examiners recognize this
- Address all parts of the question
- Leave time to proofread
Step 4 of 4
Speaking Test Confidence
Part 1: Familiar topics (4-5 min). Part 2: Speak for 2 minutes on a topic card after 1 minute preparation. Part 3: Discussion of abstract ideas. Speak naturally, extend answers, use a range of grammar and vocabulary. The examiner assesses fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
- Record yourself speaking and listen back
- Practice common Part 2 topics
- Develop opinions on current affairs
- Think in English, don't translate from your language
